I'm sitting here, head on my fist;
Trying to write something clever and bold,
But whenever my hand on my wrist
Reaches out to the keyboard, I fold.
I withdraw, and sit there a bit
Just hoping my juices will flow,
And my brain will regain its lost wit;
Where it's gone, I never will know.
I say to my mind, "What is wrong?
Just where are those phrases and quips?
Pray, tell, what is taking so long?
Not a word wants to flow past my lips."
I say, "What's the issue right now?"
I reply, with my eye on the clock;
"I can't think 'cause my brain has shut down;
So I'll write about my writer's block."
The Traveling, Care for Kiddie, Blues (A song about traveling with children)
My wife said, "Dear,
Don't you think that we're
About ready for some traveling time?"
I, in reply, said with a sigh,
"I suppose that would be just fine.
But remember, love,
That the Lord above
Gave us four little kids to rear
And the car's back seat
Won't be too neat,
And the kiddies will be something to fear.
Refrain:
We've got the traveling, care for kiddie, blues.
We've got the traveling, care for kiddie, blues.
When you turn that key
For a two week spree,
You'll get the traveling, care for kiddie, blues.
So we're on our way, wishing we had stayed;
Knowing very well that we will here
A still small voice,
Saying, "There's no choice;
It's either stop, or I'll go right here.
Please Daddy, Dear,
Let's stop right here,
'Cause I know that I just can't wait."
So I know I can't win;
I force myself to grin;
Then I hear, "Sorry Dad, too late."
Back to refrain:
As time goes on,
We hear a brand new song,
"I'm hungry, I'm thirsty, let's eat."
So, I know I can't win,
It's McDonald's, Drive-in.
We enter, and we take our seat.
"I want some fries,
Give me hot apple pies,
Give me this, give me that, give me those."
With the urge to kill,
I'm alright until
A little brat shoves a fry up my nose.
Back to refrain:
It's all over now
And we wonder how
In the world we have lasted this long.
As we turn the key
From our two spree,
It's no wonder why our nerves are gone.
We sigh with relief,
Share a common grief,
We see four sleepy heads in the rear.
Four angels we know,
With their halos aglow,
They're our little, red-horn-headed, dears.
Back to refrain:

Truthful (Song of God's truthfulness to his children)-Written for children
Verse 1
Our parents always tell us never tell a lie.
We say we always do as we are told;
But are we being truthful when we say such things?
Or is the truth not in us? His example do we show?
Refrain:
He is truthful, He’s always truthful.
His promises are sacred, this we know.
He promised He would never, ever leave us all alone;
We feel His love no matter where we go.
Verse 2
We fail him every time we disobey His will.
He promised to redeem us and forgive.
Sometimes He’ll find us hiding for the sins we’ve done.
It breaks His heart to see the way we often want to live.
Back to refrain:
Bridge:
When the world descends upon you with it’s pressures and it’s lies,
What are you going to do to win the fight?
Just look to His example, take His promises to heart,
He’ll show you how to make it turn out right.

Eternal (Song of God's eternal love for us)-Written for Children
Verse 1
Many people come and go as we journey through this life.
And we realize how short the time we share.
But there’s one who’s always with us and will be there when we’re gone.
He’s forever, He’s eternal, and he cares.
Refrain:
He’s eternal, (echo) He’s eternal
And He loves us, (echo) And He loves us.
He invites us to eternity on high.
From the moment we receive Him our eternal lives begin
And we know our spirit never, ever dies.
Verse 2
What a comfort just to know that he’s always, always there;
That He guides us in our travel through this life.
We’ve a long way yet to journey as we start our lives, so new
We’re His children and we’re precious in His sight.
Back to refrain:
Bridge:
He’s eternal, He’s eternal, He’s eternal ever more
He was there before the start; and He’ll be there when all is done.

A Wedding Song (Pocahantas sings to John Rolf at their wedding)- History
Here I am, dancing in the night; your love has made me giddy as a girl
It’s too late, no need for me to fight, for love has come to me across the world
Here I am, but what am I to do? My feelings, they are running to and fro.
Since I gave my loving heart to you, I sing for joy for now true love I know.
Refrain:
This is my wedding song to you, my love,
And the Great Spirit smiles upon us here.
With body, soul and mind
I think that you will find
That I do love you, have no fear.
Here you are, sitting, watching me with devotion and with heart-felt love.
To all here, it’s very plain to see; my spirit soars on wings just like a dove.
Here I dance, and though I know they’re here, our people are like spirits in the night.
I see you, and only you, my dear; your face a-glowing in the pale moon light.

To Be Free to Laugh and Love (Song of Judith's Slave) - History
York's beloved happens to be Judith Handcock's personal slave who notices the happiness on Judith's face in anticipation of William Clark's arrival. Her slave sings this song when she is finally left alone in her thoughts about how she would love to be as happy as Judith.
How happy she looks, how excited she seems
I feel her sweet joys and share in her dreams.
How nice it would be to have joys of my own
To cherish as memories for the time I am grown.
Just look how she moves, as free as a bird.
She goes where she wants without saying a word.
A reason to dance is all that I need,
But before I can have it, I have to be free.
(Refrain)
O, to be free to laugh and love!
O, that my soul could fly like a dove!
O, that my heart could leap with delight
Into a world where freedom’s a right!
(Tag for repeat of refrain)
I’ll pray for my freedom tonight!
(Bridge)
Someday I will be on my own
To travel wherever winds blow.
Someday, soon, I’ll shout out with glee
That my country’s finally free.
(Repeat refrain with tag)

To Love and Laugh and Live (Judith's song of anticipation) - History
Judith Hancock was the beloved of William Clark. He promised to propose to her when he returned from one of his journeys. She sings this song in anticipation of his coming.
This waiting is making me shiver.
It’s driving me almost insane,
My soul wants to leap and quiver;
This anticipation’s a pain.
I’m trying to picture his face,
His eyes, how they pierced my soul!
But soon all these pictures will fade.
I just want him here to hold.
(Refrain)
All I ever really want is to laugh and love and live;
All I ever really need is to feel his arms around me;
All I ever want to do is to kiss his lips and to give
All the love I have to offer him so free.
(Bridge)
How long can my heart keep this pace
With the excitement I’m feeling inside?
How long can I picture his face
As I’m standing with him as his bride?
This waiting is making me shiver.
It’s driving me almost insane,
My soul wants to leap and quiver;
This anticipation’s a pain.
I’m trying to picture his face,
His eyes, how they pierced my soul!
But soon all these pictures will fade.
I just want him here to hold.

We Will All Be Free Someday (Song of the town drunk) - History
The town drunk sometimes hears things he shouldn't hear. In this case, he hears that a slave has escaped but he knows better. He knows that a certain local plantation owner has been been secretly releasing slaves at a rate of one a year. He has sworn himself to secrecy and nothing will persuade him to reveal who it is. However, under the influence of alcohol, that vow may not be so easy to keep.
I have a secret that I’ll never tell;
Though you torture me and pull my toenails out.
You could break my arms and pull my teeth but I will never yell;
This secret’s safe with me, without a doubt.
(Takes a drink)
Refrain:
We will all be free some day!
We will all be free some day
To reveal what we believe
That our country really needs.
We will all be free some day.
(Takes a drink)
I have a secret I might never tell;
Though you yell at me or fill my mouth with dirt.
You could pull my hair or tie me up but I will never sell
My secret news for any thing on earth.
(Takes another big drink)
(Back to refrain)
(Takes another big drink)
I have a secret that I’d like to keep
Though you call me names and offer me a drink.
If you scolded me and railed at me, then I might see a need;
But until then my lips are sealed, I think.
(Another drink)

And I often tilt and end up off my feet.

Tomorrow Will Be a New Day (Love song by York) - History
Tomorrow Will Be a New Day
(York’s love song)
York was a slave of William Clark who accompanied him in his travels. York sings this love song to a slave girl with whom he has fallen in love. He sings to her just before his departure with Clark.
“I’ll be back before you know it,” is an easy thing to say
But can be much, much harder when love is in the way.
In matters of our country, a year is very near.
In matters of the heart we find that an hour’s like a year.
So what am I to say when I leave this place?
What kind of truth do I give her, until again I see her face?
Refrain:
Tomorrow will be a new day
And every day thereafter will be like jewels along your way;
A rain drop here, a snow flake there, a fire- fly taking flight
Will be collected by your memories as I leave this place tonight.
Hold them ‘til I return, love.
And use them all as decorations as they are jewels from above.
Display them here, display them there on our very special night
And let them guide us in our journey in our life as man and wife.
(Bridge)
I will return, love, please wait for me.
Then we’ll be wed, love, eternally.

While Betsy Sews Her Flag (Song of the Minute Men) - Patriotic
Grab your muskets men we’re off to war again.
We’ll show those Red Coats how we fight for freedom’s cause.
We are sure to win if we are faithful men;
We’ll hit ‘em where it hurts and without pause
We’ll shoot ‘em from the forest and we’ll shoot ‘em from the trees
We’ll shoot ‘em from the bushes and we’ll bring ‘em to their knees.
We’ll shoot ‘em from our windows and we’ll shoot ‘em from our doors
We’ll take a break for lunch and then we’ll shoot ‘em even more,
While Betsy sews her flag.
Grab your muskets men we’re off to war again.
We’ll send those Red Coats back to England whence they came.
We are sure to win if we are faithful men.
We’re called the “Minute Men,” that is our name.
We’ll hide behind the rocks and then we’ll hide behind the trees,
We’ll shoot ‘em two by two and then we’ll pick ‘em off like fleas.
We’ll shoot ‘em from a hole and then we’ll shoot ‘em from a hill
We’ll stop to plant a crop and then we’ll shoot again at will.
While Betsy sews her flag.
Grab your muskets men we’re off to war again.
We have to show the King how serious we are.
We are sure to win if we are faithful men.
We’ll hit ‘em where they are, both near and far.
We’ll shoot ‘em from the village and we’ll shoot ‘em from the town.
We’ll shoot ‘em from the river and we’ll shoot ‘em till they’re down
We’ll shoot ‘em while their marching and we’ll shoot ‘em when they sit.
We’ll shoot ‘em when their resting or they stop to take a break.
(Alternative: Or they’re sleeping in a pit)
And we’ll do all this until our country’s free
While Betsy sews her flag for America.
We’ll show those Red Coats how we fight for freedom’s cause.

From Sea to Shining Sea (Patriotic Song)
Nestled here among three oceans America stands proud;
A gentle giant, friend of liberty.
And all those born and raised here don’t mind to say aloud
This is my country for eternity.
(Refrain)
From Sea to Shining Sea
My country ‘tis of thee.
My song of freedom swells within my breast.
I pledge allegiance to
Our flag, red, white and blue.
Compared to those beyond, our country’s blessed.
Many years have come and gone since America was born.
She’s still a youngster when compared to most.
She clothes herself in freedom, proclaiming evermore
That Liberty is ours from coast to coast.
Many folks from many lands come to our shores each day;
Those huddled masses yearning to breathe free.
To those who live within our laws, we just want to say
Welcome to the land of Liberty!
(Back to Refrain)
To our mortal enemies, we have but one last thought
To ponder as you plot your evil deeds.
Our gentle giant’s famous for some lessons he has taught –
His wrath is felt in air, on land, and seas.

When Brothers Turned on Brothers (Civil War Song)
We fought together, side by side to break the British hold.
We were, as brothers arm in arm; our cause was just and bold.
Our very freedom was at stake in this our glorious land;
A freedom meant for every one; ‘twas God’s intended plan.
As time went by we grew apart, each with our own ideals
Of what it means to be set free; that’s when our fate was sealed.
For many, freedom meant that we had right to liberty.
For others, freedom meant the right to practice slavery.
Refrain:
Oh why could we not stop the turmoil that was sure to be
When people turned against their own in this, our fair country.
Oh why could we not see how much, the suffering we would cause
When brothers turned on brothers in a war that knew no pause.
The war drew on from year to year as blood flowed through the din.
The landscape stunk of ugly death, who once were vital men.
The wives and mothers of the dead were left with nothing more
Than tears and wails, convulsive sobs, and remnants of the war.
The end did come, but what a price was paid with human lives.
Sometimes we need to pause and ask ourselves just why, O why
Could we not see the misery, the folly of our choice
To fight a war among ourselves and kill our men and boys.
We were, as brothers arm in arm; our cause was just and bold.
Our very freedom was at stake in this our glorious land;
A freedom meant for every one; ‘twas God’s intended plan.

The Ten Amendments in Rhyme (The Bill of Rights)
Amendment # 1.
Religion is a special right I give to everyone;
But not a right for congress to establish only one.
I give to all the right to speak and even to assemble.
And you can even send complaints and make our congress tremble.
Amendment # 2
To many, it’s a real cool thing to keep and own a gun.
To others, it’s a tool for evil, when the evil’s done.
And still today, I give this right for good, that’s understood;
Protection, hunting, shooting sports, all these are very good.
Amendment # 3
My right’s a bit unusual and not too often seen
But here I give it anyway in case there is a need.
Whenever there is peace or war in our great country fair,
Your homes shall be protected from a soldier living there.
.
Amendment # 4
Now here’s a right that makes us feel secure with many features.
We have the right to be secure from search or even seizures.
Search warrants are required as well as having real good cause,
Without them even cops can be accused of breaking laws.
Amendment # 5
In this amendment you’re assured that you are fairly tried
Of any major crime to which you may be clearly tied.
. And if you own some land for which the public has a need,
Just compensation must be paid to you to own your deed..
Amendment # 6
About a crime for which you’re held it must be understood;
You have the right to speedy trial; this is for your own good.
You have the right to counsel who will stand up for your side.
Accusers, they must be there too, to look you in the eye.
Amendment # 7
At common law sometimes you’re sued for things of little cost;
And often it is best for us to take that little loss.
But value more than twenty dollars triggers something new;
‘Cause now the right to trial by jury can be used by you.
Amendment # 8
Some things in laws and judgments leave a lot to be desired;
‘Cause some opinions vary as the judgments they require.
For instance, now you have a right to bail, but not excessive.
But ideas of excessive for some Judges are impressive.
Amendment # 9
Within this Bill, so wonderful, with lawful rights displayed,
There’s one more thing that’s needed here, and this one thing I say;
You must not think that this is all our rights herein fulfilled;
There’s right of life and liberty and happiness as well.
Amendment # 10
The constitution makes it clear, the powers of the Fed.
All others are now delegated to our states instead.

Religion is a special right I give to everyone;
And still today, I give this right for good, that’s understood;
About a crime for which you’re held it must be understood;
You have the right to speedy trial; this is for your own good.
You have the right to counsel who will stand up for your side.
Accusers, they must be there too, to look you in the eye.
Amendment # 7
At common law sometimes you’re sued for things of little cost;
And often it is best for us to take that little loss.
But value more than twenty dollars triggers something new;
‘Cause now the right to trial by jury can be used by you.
Amendment # 8
Some things in laws and judgments leave a lot to be desired;
‘Cause some opinions vary as the judgments they require.
For instance, now you have a right to bail, but not excessive.
But ideas of excessive for some Judges are impressive.
Amendment # 9
Within this Bill, so wonderful, with lawful rights displayed,
There’s one more thing that’s needed here, and this one thing I say;
You must not think that this is all our rights herein fulfilled;
There’s right of life and liberty and happiness as well.
Amendment # 10
The constitution makes it clear, the powers of the Fed.
All others are now delegated to our states instead.
The last four words are critical to this great Bill of Rights.
“Or to the people,” when they’re read, makes everything alright.

Hasn't America Suffered Enough? (Limerick Form - Patriotic)
Hasn’t America suffered enough?
Can’t we do much better for her?
Have our morals declined
To the point that we find
That what’s wrong and what’s right is a blur?
Hasn’t America suffered enough?
Have our selfish desires run amuck?
Are our fam’lies of late
Being raised by the State?
Have our young people run out of luck?
Hasn’t America suffered enough?
Letting Congress do all of our work -
Have we lost all desire
To rekindle the fire
Of the freedom men died to preserve?
Hasn’t America suffered enough?
Do we take what we’re told is for free?
Have we sold our birth-right,
Given up on the fight
To determine our own destiny?
Hasn’t America suffered enough?
Has complacency taken our souls?
Do we not even care
That the vote that we share
Could be one that helps evil take hold?
Hasn’t America suffered enough?
Have we helped spread our moral decay?
Do we laugh at the few
Who would spread Christ anew
When He’s desperately needed today?

Spring Song (Lyrics - Marriage and Family)
Spring has sprung
The time has come
When all the flowers bloom
And wives are calling husbands
To man the household broom.
He sits and stares
So unaware
The fate that waits for him;
When from the pantry entrance
Appears a sight so grim.
Chorus
It’s Spring-time!
Guess what that means!
It’s Spring-time!
You know what I need!
She’s standing there
With icy stare
And speaks with grating voice;
“A mop, a broom, a duster;
Now sweetheart, take your choice!”
His mouth, agape
But it’s too late,
There’s nothing he can do.
She says, “And when you’re finished
I want the screens done too.”
(Back to chorus)
“OK, my dear”,
He says, “I hear.
I’ll do it right away.
But sweetheart, when I’m finished
Can I play golf today?”
She says, “OK
You can go play
But I have never seen
A course with lighted fairways
Or one with lighted greens.”
(Back to chorus)

Christmas From a Child's Point of View (Family)
It’s Christmas time again, far out!
I wonder what I’ll get?
Ole Santa said don’t cry, don’t pout,
I haven’t done it yet.
But just how closely does he see
The things I say and do?
Sometimes I’m mean and I can be
A little ornery too.
Sometimes I’m sneaky too because
On Christmas eve real late
I’d plan to spy on Santa Claus
But couldn’t stay awake.
On second thought, I’m not so sure
Ole Santa, I can trust;
He just might think I’m not so pure
And make Christmas a bust!
O well, there’s no need for a frown
And there’s no need to fret
‘Cause Mom and Dad won’t let me down
I’ll have a Christmas yet!
I gave my list to Mom and Dad
And set my goals real high.
If I get half I’ll still be glad----
Can’t say I didn’t try.
I wonder, would it be O.K.
For me to share a toy
With someone born on Christmas day;
With Mary’s baby boy?
I wonder what I’ll get?
Ole Santa said don’t cry, don’t pout,
I haven’t done it yet.
But just how closely does he see

A Father's Role (Family)
A father’s role should be that of a guide
Who points out the pitfalls of life.
He walks with his children through thick and through thin
And leads them through trouble and strife.
He gives them the tools they’ll need to survive
In a world fraught with dangers unknown;.
A “Rock of Gibralter”, a mentor, a friend
Who’s there by their side till they’re grown.
A father’s role is to teach and instruct
In the techniques of riding a bike.
But compared to the time when they’re driving his car
Those instructions will seem rather trite.
A father’s role, when he’s raising a son
Is to be like a friend all his life.
But his role for a daughter is often quite sad
For he gives her to be someone’s wife.

A Mother's Role (Family)
A mother’s role is not eas’ly defined
As she wears many hats day by day;
A doctor, a judge, and a diplomat too,
And to referee kids as they play.
A mother’s role is to nurture her child
From beginning of life till they’re grown
With life-giving food, and a peace-giving love,
And a patience so strong, it’s unknown.
A mother’s role is a teacher as well;
An extension of school and beyond.
She helps them to take what they’ve learned in the class
And apply it to life when they’re gone.
A mother’s job is not ever complete,
Not without her most critical role;
To be the example her children will need
To prepare them both body and soul.

A Star Trek Christmas (A Special Present)
So you’re a Trekie true and blue,
Then I’ve got such good news for you;
For underneath the Christmas tree
Is something you will want to see.
Could it be Kirk? Could it be Spock?
Could it be Sulu, “Bones” the Doc?
Or even Data or Picard?
So think man, think! It’s not that hard.
I’ll tell you if you want me to.
But first, there’s something you must do.
Stand here upon this transport pad
‘Cause if you do, you will be glad.
Stand very still; look straight ahead
Or I’ll transport you straight to bed.
Now close your eyes, get set for this.
Now, here it comes - Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!

One Man's Rumination (Surprise Ending)
She makes my heart cry out with joy
Each time I see her there.
Her graceful form, eyes can't avoid.
Her skin so smooth and fair.
Her arms reach out alluringly;
She beckons even now.
Her face aglow, assuring me,
All will be right somehow.
Her moves, so effortless and smooth
And ageless in her stride;
Her beauty tends to quell and soothe
This man's oft wounded pride.
She's mine! All mine! And all who know
Will speak, though grudgingly,
That she, as said by friend or foe,
Responds to only me.

A Star Trek Christmas (A Christmas Adventure)
‘Twas the night before Christmas
Throughout the great ship,
The Third-watch was stirring---
Control panels lit.
The crews socks were hung
By Picard’s “Ready Room”
In hopes that old Santa would
Come by real soon.
Most of the crew were all
Snug in their beds
While visions of “Tribble” pets
Danced in their heads.
And Worf, in his sash
And I In my tights
Had just settled down
For some “cat-naps” that night.
When out on the hull
There arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bunk
To see what was the matter.
Away , toward the porthole
I flew like a flash,
Tripping over Worf’s trousers
And fell with a crash!
The World, on the breast
Of the saucer outside
Gave the luster of “Earth-glow,”
A beautiful sight.
When, what to my wondering
Eyes should appear,
But a miniature shuttle
Drawn by something real queer!
With a skinny, bald driver,
Shiny head like a star,
It looked for a moment
Like Jean Luc Picard.
More rapid than Klingons
His courser, it came,
He barked out some orders
And called it by name-
On DATA! No matter
How funny this looks,
We’ll fly like a comet;
Break all record books!
To the top of the saucer,
Past both “Warp Nacells
Now dash away DATA!
You’re doing real well!
A sickness began
While watching them move.
With dizzying speed,
‘Round the saucer they flew.
So up to the ship-top
The shuttle, it flew
With DATA in front
Pulling ST. Picard too.
And then, in a twinkling,
They flew out of sight,
Toward the stern of the ship
The shuttle took flight.
As I drew back my head
And was turning around,
I collided with Worf
And fell with a bound.
“What’s the matter?” he said,
“What are you looking for?”
As I got to my knees
To get off of the floor.
“Oh I saw something strange
As I looked out tonight.
But it’s no longer there-
It’s gone out of sight.”
“Don’t worry,” he said,
“I forgot, you’re new here,
Picard plays our Santa Clause
Year, after year.”
“He dresses in fur
From his head to his foot,
Wipes the sleeves of his garment
With ashes and soot.”
“A bag full of gadgets
He flings on his back,
And he looks like a Mugato
About to attack.”
I laughed and I laughed,
From what he told me,
I knew it was something
I just had to see.
I peeked in the hall
Through a crack in the door.
Sure enough, there he was
With his pack on the floor.
His head , in the bag
Was a real funny sight
As he filled up our stockings
We’d hung out that night.
A Stogie cigar
He held tight in his teeth.
And he made his way down
To the door nearest me.
He had a thin face
And a little fake belly
that shook, when he laughed
Like a bowl full of jelly.
He was lanky and long,
A right funny old elf.
I laughed when I saw him
In spite of myself.
He spoke not a word
But went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings;
Then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger
Upon his left breast,
He spoke a few words
Which I heard, more or less.
I heard him say “DATA!
Transporter! Engage!”
And then he was gone-
What an exit he made!
He sprang to his ship,
At the android, he whistled,
And away, they both flew
Like a real funny missile.
But I heard him exclaim
(And I tell you no lies),
“Happy Christmas to all

A Special Birthday (A Star Trek Adventure)
“Do you know what today is?”
Said James Kirk to the crew.
“Today is very special
And includes each of you.”
“There is a friend among us
Who’s loved by everyone.
It also is his birthday
I want to have some fun.”
“I want to do what no one
Has done for quite a while,
And celebrate his birthday
And try to make him smile.”
“Eet must be Spock,” said Chekov
“But eet could never be-
He’s never one for parties;
Right through us, he will see.”
“Since when, has my crew faltered ?
Since when has my crew failed?
We’ve never ducked a challenge,
Together, we’ll prevail.”
Just then the ship shook wildly,
Repeated blows she took.
The *shields held strong before it,
But still she shook and shook.
“The *Klingons sir, they’re hailing!”
“On screen,” the Captain said.
Then what appeared before them
Turned Captain Kirk’s face red.
But holding back his anger
So’s not to let it show,
He sat with his arms folded,
And then he calmly spoke.
“Well, Rogan, you old warrior,
What brings you out this far?
I didn’t think the Klingon’s
Were wanting all-out war.”
Just then, the lift door opened,
And out stepped Mr. Spock.
With calm repose he stood there;
Showed no surprise or shock.
“ The same is thought of you, Kirk,
What brings You out this far?
You’ve passed the Klingon boundary
You’re risking all-out war.”
“There’s some misunderstanding,
The treaty made it clear,
This zone we share is neutral.
You have no need to fear.”
“Who me, fear you, dear Captain?”
Said Rogan, with a laugh..
“I rue the day that happens.
How can you be so crass?”
“But what about the treaty
Your leaders all have signed?
We’ve kept it to the letter,
and read it line -by-line.”
“In treaties, there’s no honor
To give in with no fight.
We are a warrior people-
Your treaties are a blight.”
“Just what are your intentions?
Now what can I expect?
Do you intend to fight me,
Or just sit there and fret?”
“Me thinks you try to goad me,”
Said Rogan with a frown.
“So do us both a favor
And turn your ship around.”
“To goad you,” said the captain
“Is far from being true.
You’ve broken your own treaty;
We could demolish you.”
“Now Captain Kirk, why banter?
Why threaten and display
When you’re the one to end it;
Just move your ship away.”
“Uh, Captain!” said Uhura
“A message coming through.
It’s Admiral Blake from Starfleet
He wants to speak to you.”
“Excuse me, Captain Rogan,
But something has come in.
A message code from Starfleet
Arriving here in ten.”
“It seems you’ve bought some time Kirk,
But only for a while.
But I’ll be back before long.”
Said Rogan, with a smile.
And as he spoke the *Warbird
Turned smoothly on a dime.
Then pow’ring up her engines
She left her wake behind.
“Uh, Captain,” said Uhura,
But you misunderstand.
This message isn’t coded
But to you, man-to-man.”
“I realize,” said the Captain,
“The type of message sent.
But Rogan didn’t know that
That’s why he turned and went.”
“You lied to him.” returned Spock,
“A bluff was all it was.
Is that a good example
Of what a human does?”
“Just tactics,” said the Captain.
“We humans use the lie.
Explore your human side, Spock.
And then you’ll know just why.”
“Why must I be reminded
Of frailties that I have?
I’d rather be all *Vulcan
Than have a human half.”
Kirk knew too well, how useless
To argue with this friend
Who’d been right there to help him
Win fights he could not win.
Then turning ‘round to face him
He said quite sheepishly.
“I’d like to ask a question,
My friend, so dear to me.”
“In all the years I’ve known you
I have, at various times,
Been privileged to notice
A smile that looks so fine;”
“But never voluntary;
Without some stimuli
To force you into smiling;
Pray tell, please tell me why.”
“Need I remind you Captain,
As friend to me you are
When I was sure I’d killed you
Right after my *‘Pon Far’?”
“Yes Spock, I do remember.
But still, I emphasize
The reason you were smiling
Was brought on by surprise.”
“You smiled for just a moment,
A lovely sight to see
But then those joyful features
Transformed in front of me.”
“What do you want then, Captain?
What are you looking for?
You know my Vulcan past sir,
I cannot give you more.”
“The kind of smile I seek, friend,
A very common one,
Is inward satisfaction
And pride, for jobs well done.”
“You have the right to smile, Spock.
You have accomplished much.
Your friends admire, respect you
You have the magic touch.”
“I cannot do that Captain,
It’s not the Vulcan way.
We fight those prideful feelings,
We fight them every day.”
And then Spock turned to exit,
Then turned back once again,
Then offered one more statement
That made the Captain grin.
“That smile of shock, my Captain
Showed weakness on my part.
Surprise is unbecoming
A truly Vulcan heart.”
“I’ll never let it happen
Again at any time.
I work at being Vulcan,
And Vulcan ways are mine.”
He turned again to exit;
The lift doors now ajar.
The Captain thought in silence,
“We’ll see how strong you are!”
“Sir, Captain, Blake is waiting !
What shall I do with him?”
“I’ll take it in my quarters-
Return to you in ten.”
And as the lift doors opened.
To Sulu gave a look.
“You have the *Con now Sulu
Just run Her by the book.”
“Aye , Aye Sir!” countered Sulu
“I’ll take good care of Her.
I’ll page you if you’re needed.
Don’t worry ‘bout her Sir.”
“It’s Kirk here Adm’ral Blake, Sir.
And how are you today?”
“Just fine, but I was wond’ring
Just what you had to say.”
“Oh yes, I see, your sensors
Picked up our incident.
Don’t worry sir he’s gone now,
He never made a dent.”
“To what , are you referring?”
Said Blake to Captain Kirk.
Our sensors picked up nothing.
All satellites still work.”
“It’s Rogan, Adm’ral Blake Sir;
He’s up to his old tricks.
He fired upon our vessel;
Just shook us up a bit.”
“I didn’t even know that
His ship was in our zone.
The last I heard he’s cruisin’
A sector near his home.
The Captain’s face looked puzzled
As deep in thought he went.
“Jim Kirk, are you still with me?
There’s something I want sent.”
“Beg pardon, Adm’ral Blake, Sir!
You haven’t lost me yet.
What do you want from me, Sir?
I’ll get it, you can bet!”
“I want to know your plans for
That thing we talked about.
I want it straight from you, Kirk
Not rumors roundabout.”
“Don’t worry”, said the Captain,
Spock’s not with me right now.
But it will be a challenge,
To honor him somehow.”
“I know, but you can do it,”
Said Blake without a smile.
The VIP’s are coming,
We’ll be there in a while.”
“I’ll send it in an hour
Right to your private line
Aboard the Constellation.
We’ll see you then in nine.”
“Blake out!” ( his voice, all bus’ness.)
“Kirk out!” came the reply.
“How curious ,” thought the Captain.
“And I’m not quite sure why.”
“Oh well, the trouble’s over,
Must do my duty first.
My plans are almost finished
I hope they’ll really work.”
Just then, the bulkhead shuddered,
The *klaxons wailed and cried.
Some force had just insulted
The mighty Enterprise.
“Report! Now! Mr. Sulu!”
Kirk hit the intercom,
“They just appeared from nowhere!”
Said Sulu from the con.
“I’m on my way!” he shouted
The ship lurched to and fro.
The deck was hard to purchase
And fear began to grow.
The hull began to rattle
Kirk bolted from the lift.
“We’ve taken hits!” said Sulu
“The ship is now adrift.”
“Let’s hear it, engineering!
What damage has been done?”
“I’m here,” said faithful Scotty
“The damage here is none.”
“Excuse me?” said the Captain,
“We’re sitting here like ducks!
If we don’t get her going
We’ll all be out of luck.”
“I canna understand sair
There was no damage done;
There is no airthly reason
The engines will not run.”
“McCoy reports no damage
To any personnel -
“A few bumps,” said Uhura
“Beyond that, all is well.”
“Our *phaser banks on line sir!”
Said Sulu, in distress.
“Then fire!” said the Captain,
“Let’s give them back our best.”
The phasers sang and crackled
And each one hit their marks.
Two Klingon ships exploded
Into a million sparks.
But filling up the spaces
Where Klingons were before,
Were two more ships before them.
They left no open door.
“Still no response at helm sir!”
Cried Chekov o’er the noise.
“And where’s Spock?” cried the Captain,
“Here sir,”said Spock’s calm voice.
Spock staggered to his station
Along the rocking rail,
Then, speaking very frankly -
“Our shield’s about to fail.”
Said Kirk to ensign Chekov,
“How many ships are here?”
“There’s three around our bow sir!
And three more at our rear!”
“The Klingons sir, they’re hailing!”
“On screen,” the Captain said.
“It’s Rogan,” said Uhura.
Again, Kirk’s face turned red.
Just then the pounding faltered,
And then completely stopped.
There, Rogan sat, arms folded,
While Kirk fumed on the spot.
“I told you I’d return, Kirk.
I brought a few friends too.
There’s nothing now to stop us ,
There’s nothing you can do.”
“Let’s talk about this Rogan”----
“No talk!” the answer back.
“I know you’re tongue is silver.
But I’ll not fall for that!”
“We’re not exactly helpless,
You’ve lost two Birds, you know,
Before more die in battle
Just turn your ships and go.”
“We dedicate this battle
To those who’ve died before.
Our vengeance will be settled
At last, forever more.”
Kirk realized for the first time,
He’d lost his silver tongue.
How could he win this battle,
How would this song be sung?
“Prepare all guns for battle!”
Kirk’s features turned to stone.
But Sulu made a comment
That froze him to the bone.
“All weapons powered down sir!”
“Confirmed!” said Mr. Spock.
“We really are quite helpless;
Our ship is in a spot.”
Kirk shouted, “What’s up, Scotty!
Our weapons now have failed.
“I dinna know,” said Scotty.
“They should be working well!”
“They’ve powered up their weapons.”
Said Spock, in calm repose.
“I don’t know how he does it!”
Thought Kirk, “Nobody knows.”
“Uhura, send a beacon!
So what occurred this day
Will always be remembered!
Quick! Send it while you may!”
Said Spock, “ Six *salvos fired.
Our shield’s at ten percent.
We’ll take this set they offer;
Our shields will then be spent.”
The mighty ship did rumble
And shook both fore and aft.
The screen, being activated-
Showed Rogan as he laughed.
“Get braced!” the Captain shouted.
“The next one will be bad.
Forgive me for my failure!
My heart is very sad!”
And even as the phasers
Shot forth from open port
The crew cried out , “We love you!”
Then nothing- nothing more.
Then silence, eerie silence
As crew began to stare.
The Klingons slowly vanished
And soon they were not there.
“Our weapons have returned, Sir!”
Said Sulu from control.
“The helm responds!” Said Chekov,
“Where deed the Klingons go?”
The Captain hit a button.
“What happened Mr. Scott?”
“The engines are online, Sair.
What happened?-I know not.”
“But I’ll find out, I promise,
I’ll search with fine-tooth comb.
And nothing will escape me;
The truth will soon be known.”
“Captain, Adm’ral Blake sir,
He wants to speak to you.
He seems upset at something.
He will arrive in two.”
“He must have seen his sensors,
And knows just what transpired.
I’ll take it in my quarters
And change to fresh attire.”
“Now, maybe he’ll believe me,
His ship was close enough
To pick up all the action,
To see the Klingon’s bluff.
“They must have seen him coming,
That’s why they turned to run.
I thank God for the Adm’ral.
I’m glad this trouble’s done.
“Kirk, what’s your explanation?”
The Adm’ral spoke quite gruff.
“I know it must have looked bad,
We all have had enough.”
“Enough?!” returned the Adm’ral.
“What are you saying Kirk?
Your orders were to send me
Those plans, now get to work!”
“But Adm’ral, weren’t you watching
The trouble we had here?
How can you be so calloused ?
We all were trapped in fear.”
“What trouble were you having?
What had you trapped in fear?”
“The Klingons ‘round our bow Sir,
The Klingons at our rear.”
“What Klingons?!” growled the Adm’ral
“If that had been the truth,
I would have been here sooner;
Is this some lame excuse?”
“I want those plans now! Pronto!
We’re just two hours away.
The VIP’s are won’dring
Just what you have to say.
“Alright, I have them ready.
I’ll signal them real soon.
I’ll have the group assembled
In our transporter room.”
“And Spock will be there also
To see his parents in.
He doesn’t know about this.
I hope to see him grin.
“The cam’ras will be running
As they *materialize.
We’ll sing him ‘Happy Birthday’
I think he’ll be surprised.”
“The rest will be there soon , Sir.
They’ll all be very clear.
We’ll meet you in two hours,
I’ll do it, have no fear.”
The party went as planned but
‘Ole Spock was not surprised,
Except for rise of eyebrow
Somehow he had surmised.
“Is he alright?” McCoy asked,
“He’s tighter than a tick.”
“It could be, what we’ve been through
Has made him slightly sick.”
“Yes, check him out tomorrow,”
The captain said to *‘Bones’,
It can’t be good to hide his
True feelings all alone.”
Spock greeted everybody,
Then turn to Kirk and said,
“Permission to retire, Sir,
I think I’ll go to bed.”
“Permission granted” said Kirk
“I thank you , Jim” Spock said.
The doors slid open for him.
He hid outside instead.
Scott hurried down the hallway,
But Spock, he did not see.
His steps were quick, delib’rate.
Displaying urgency.
He hurried to the Captain,
His entourage in tow.
“I think we found our ‘bug’ sair.
It’s something you should know.”
“You must recall your days, Sair,
At the Academy.
The thing for which you’re famous.
For which we all agree.”
Spock listened in the hallway,
Keen ears attentive now.
As Scott recounts the details
Of when, and where, and how.
The VIP’s now listened.
The crew, they listened too.
“Aye, Jim, that thing you’re known for-
*‘KOBIYASHI MARU’.”
The crowd gasped in surprise now.
Kirk’s face turned red and blue.
“Someone installed the program.
The question now is -who?”
Spock turned his steps to quarter’s
The door slid open wide.
And as it shut behind him-
-A GIANT SMILE OF PRIDE!

Kobiyashimaru: This is a test which is required of all Starfleet cadets. It is a computerized, simulated battle with a “no win” scenario to test the mettle and character of potential officers.
Said James Kirk to the crew.
“Today is very special
And includes each of you.”
“There is a friend among us
Who’s loved by everyone.
It also is his birthday
I want to have some fun.”
“I want to do what no one
Has done for quite a while,
And celebrate his birthday
And try to make him smile.”
“Eet must be Spock,” said Chekov
“But eet could never be-
He’s never one for parties;
Right through us, he will see.”
“Since when, has my crew faltered ?
Since when has my crew failed?
We’ve never ducked a challenge,
Together, we’ll prevail.”
Just then the ship shook wildly,
Repeated blows she took.
The *shields held strong before it,
But still she shook and shook.
“The *Klingons sir, they’re hailing!”
“On screen,” the Captain said.
Then what appeared before them
Turned Captain Kirk’s face red.
But holding back his anger
So’s not to let it show,
He sat with his arms folded,
And then he calmly spoke.
“Well, Rogan, you old warrior,
What brings you out this far?
I didn’t think the Klingon’s
Were wanting all-out war.”
Just then, the lift door opened,
And out stepped Mr. Spock.
With calm repose he stood there;
Showed no surprise or shock.
“ The same is thought of you, Kirk,
What brings You out this far?
You’ve passed the Klingon boundary
You’re risking all-out war.”
“There’s some misunderstanding,
The treaty made it clear,
This zone we share is neutral.
You have no need to fear.”
“Who me, fear you, dear Captain?”
Said Rogan, with a laugh..
“I rue the day that happens.
How can you be so crass?”
“But what about the treaty
Your leaders all have signed?
We’ve kept it to the letter,
and read it line -by-line.”
“In treaties, there’s no honor
To give in with no fight.
We are a warrior people-
Your treaties are a blight.”
“Just what are your intentions?
Now what can I expect?
Do you intend to fight me,
Or just sit there and fret?”
“Me thinks you try to goad me,”
Said Rogan with a frown.
“So do us both a favor
And turn your ship around.”
“To goad you,” said the captain
“Is far from being true.
You’ve broken your own treaty;
We could demolish you.”
“Now Captain Kirk, why banter?
Why threaten and display
When you’re the one to end it;
Just move your ship away.”
“Uh, Captain!” said Uhura
“A message coming through.
It’s Admiral Blake from Starfleet
He wants to speak to you.”
“Excuse me, Captain Rogan,
But something has come in.
A message code from Starfleet
Arriving here in ten.”
“It seems you’ve bought some time Kirk,
But only for a while.
But I’ll be back before long.”
Said Rogan, with a smile.
And as he spoke the *Warbird
Turned smoothly on a dime.
Then pow’ring up her engines
She left her wake behind.
“Uh, Captain,” said Uhura,
But you misunderstand.
This message isn’t coded
But to you, man-to-man.”
“I realize,” said the Captain,
“The type of message sent.
But Rogan didn’t know that
That’s why he turned and went.”
“You lied to him.” returned Spock,
“A bluff was all it was.
Is that a good example
Of what a human does?”
“Just tactics,” said the Captain.
“We humans use the lie.
Explore your human side, Spock.
And then you’ll know just why.”
“Why must I be reminded
Of frailties that I have?
I’d rather be all *Vulcan
Than have a human half.”
Kirk knew too well, how useless
To argue with this friend
Who’d been right there to help him
Win fights he could not win.
Then turning ‘round to face him
He said quite sheepishly.
“I’d like to ask a question,
My friend, so dear to me.”
“In all the years I’ve known you
I have, at various times,
Been privileged to notice
A smile that looks so fine;”
“But never voluntary;
Without some stimuli
To force you into smiling;
Pray tell, please tell me why.”
“Need I remind you Captain,
As friend to me you are
When I was sure I’d killed you
Right after my *‘Pon Far’?”
“Yes Spock, I do remember.
But still, I emphasize
The reason you were smiling
Was brought on by surprise.”
“You smiled for just a moment,
A lovely sight to see
But then those joyful features
Transformed in front of me.”
“What do you want then, Captain?
What are you looking for?
You know my Vulcan past sir,
I cannot give you more.”
“The kind of smile I seek, friend,
A very common one,
Is inward satisfaction
And pride, for jobs well done.”
“You have the right to smile, Spock.
You have accomplished much.
Your friends admire, respect you
You have the magic touch.”
“I cannot do that Captain,
It’s not the Vulcan way.
We fight those prideful feelings,
We fight them every day.”
And then Spock turned to exit,
Then turned back once again,
Then offered one more statement
That made the Captain grin.
“That smile of shock, my Captain
Showed weakness on my part.
Surprise is unbecoming
A truly Vulcan heart.”
“I’ll never let it happen
Again at any time.
I work at being Vulcan,
And Vulcan ways are mine.”
He turned again to exit;
The lift doors now ajar.
The Captain thought in silence,
“We’ll see how strong you are!”
“Sir, Captain, Blake is waiting !
What shall I do with him?”
“I’ll take it in my quarters-
Return to you in ten.”
And as the lift doors opened.
To Sulu gave a look.
“You have the *Con now Sulu
Just run Her by the book.”
“Aye , Aye Sir!” countered Sulu
“I’ll take good care of Her.
I’ll page you if you’re needed.
Don’t worry ‘bout her Sir.”
“It’s Kirk here Adm’ral Blake, Sir.
And how are you today?”
“Just fine, but I was wond’ring
Just what you had to say.”
“Oh yes, I see, your sensors
Picked up our incident.
Don’t worry sir he’s gone now,
He never made a dent.”
“To what , are you referring?”
Said Blake to Captain Kirk.
Our sensors picked up nothing.
All satellites still work.”
“It’s Rogan, Adm’ral Blake Sir;
He’s up to his old tricks.
He fired upon our vessel;
Just shook us up a bit.”
“I didn’t even know that
His ship was in our zone.
The last I heard he’s cruisin’
A sector near his home.
The Captain’s face looked puzzled
As deep in thought he went.
“Jim Kirk, are you still with me?
There’s something I want sent.”
“Beg pardon, Adm’ral Blake, Sir!
You haven’t lost me yet.

Bad Decisions (Growing Up)
I used to think, when I was just a child
How nice it'd be to have my way a while.
To be, or not to be, would be strictly up to me.
Those thoughts of freedom often made me smile.
I'd stay up late at night, withdraw from school.
With all my friends and buddies, act the fool.
Each day of life to me, one big party, it would be.
"Do what you like" would be my golden rule.
As time went by I grew of working age
And I was ready now to earn a wage.
At last I would be free, independant as could be.
It won't be long before I'll leave this cage.
Adulthood came, and then my childhood schemes.
I quit that school, left home, pursued my dreams.
I looked for all my chums; I found they all were bums;
Was this my my fate? Just what does all this mean?
I worked real hard just to make ends meet
At times it was a struggle just to eat.
I worked so hard to live, I had no time to give
To making all those dreams come true for me.
Now middle-aged and in the prime of life
I live a life of struggle, toil and strife.
I look back now and then to see what could have been
Had I not been so eager to take flight.
I'd stay at home, enjoy my teen-aged years.
I'd be a good example to my peers.
I'd choose my friends with care; of drugs I would beware.
I'd stay in school and face life without fear.
It's now too late to change those selfish dreams;
Those foolish, often silly childhood schemes.
My "Bed of Roses" grew into a thorn-bed too.
Take heed and see and learn what all this means.
Now I'm sitting on the bottom of the world
Just looking up at where I have been.
My bad decisions now at me are hurled
By memories of folly, now and then.
I looked for all my chums; I found they all were bums;
It's now too late to change those selfish dreams;

"Seefood Diet" (Self Esteem)
Dieting isn't my favorite thing
You can see from my wide, pudgy face;
And I've yo-yoed so much that I've broken my string;
Now my waistline's indeed a digrace.
I've tried all the popular diets today
And I've found them to be like a curse.
'Cause when I attempted to do it their way,
I would feel it much worse in my purse.
Weight-Watchers, stillman, and Scarsdale and more,
Dexatrim, Jenny Craig, Formu-three
By the time I reached Slimfast I really was poor
And my money was scarce as could be.
I tried eating grapefruit, low calorie foods;
I've drunk so much water, I'm sick;
And eating low-fats never, ever tastes good
So I reasoned that now I was licked.
Dieting often has entered my mind
When I've gorged on a thick, juicy steak.
But those thoughts disappear and are left far behind
When I've taken a few moments break.
My fingers have swelled from the salt in my meals
Not to mention the layer of fat.
My skin is so tight that I can't even feel
And my ring has been stretched to the max.
"Donelops Disease" has invaded my "Bod"
As my stomach's done lopped o'er my belt.
My dreams of becoming as thin as a rod
Have been lost in a big "Patty-Melt."
My hour glass figure has shifted a bit
And the sand has all gone to my thighs.
My favorite clothing no longer will fit,
And my zippers won't zip up my flies.

A Grandfather's Role (Family)
To be a young father is really quite nice
While your energy level is high,
And your nerves are like steel, and you veins are like ice,
And your youth gets you through late at night.
But a grandfather's role can be really a joy
'Cause there's nothing to be but a friend
Who brings the kids candy and cookies and toys
And who causes their parents to cringe.
To know how to fish is a grandfather's role
When his grandkids are ready to learn;
To teach them to wield a long fishing pole
And just how to hook on a worm.
His role is to teach them to build their own kite
And which way they should run with the string.
To show them that what they are thinking is right,
That Granddad can do anything.
A grandfather's role is to give his advice
Based on years of exerience past.
An occasional hug is also quite nice
And will make the relationship last.
And on a bad day when his patience is thin
And he just wants to be left alone.
The best thought of all which will make Granddad grin,
Is the thought, he can send them back home.
While your energy level is high,

A Grandmother's Role (Family)
As mother, you constantly paid up your dues
With sacrifice being the price.
Though often your happiness turned into blues;
Today, the results are quite nice.
You brought up your children the way they should go,
And now the rewards have arrived.
You've restarted life in a grandmother's role
Since as a young mom you've survived.
The best part of living has now just begun
As grandchildren enter your life.
Your role as a grandmother really is fun,
Like starting out, husband and wife.
The first role of many, a grandmother has
Is as "baby sitter" at times.
But this role makes grandmas grow older too fast
Good days, though, are not far behind.
The next role you'll take as years come and go
Is "teacher of things right and wrong."
Traditional lessons and things that you know
Will build for them foundations, strong.
You'll teach them to bake all those cookies, so sweet
And feed them what's best for them too.
And after their done with their food and their treat
You'll teach them to clean, through and through.
But even grandmothers can get tired too.
You'll kick back that soft, easy chair.
But unlike their parents, your day will be through
And you'll still have most of your hair.
With sacrifice being the price.
Though often your happiness turned into blues;
Today, the results are quite nice.
You brought up your children the way they should go,
And now the rewards have arrived.

The Cave Divers (An Adventure)
Dick filled his tanks and grabbed his gear,
The sound of bubbles in his ears.
The call was loud, the urge was great;
He never missed a diving date.
"A few more miles to pick up Jim,
And then we're off," he said, but then
The thought just entered in his mind
That he had left his diving line.
Just what direction would he choose?
Would he go back, more time to lose?
How good was he at tempting fate?
"If I turn now, I'll sure be late."
He slowed his car as if to stop
To turn around but then he thought
"Oh well, the time, I'd rather save;
Besides, I really know that cave."
Beep! Beep! "Hey Jim! Let's go! Can't wait!
You do recall our diving date?"
"I'll be right there in just a flash;
I'll get my gear and then we'll dash."
So off they went, a happy pair,
Just Dick and Jim, without a care.
But then a thought came through Dick's mind-
"Just what about that diving line?"
"Should I tell Jim and spoil his day?
I wonder what I'm going to say.
Oh well, I'll wait till we get there.
I know ole Jim, he just won't care."
When they arrived they scarce could wait
To carry out there diving date.
But then ole Jim said something queer-
"Do we have all our diving gear?"
"I see our lights, our fins and mask,
Our suits, belts, P.C.P.'s and that
Is all, the watch, of course, is mine;
But tell me, where's your diving line?"
Dick's face was flushed, his tongue was tied;
He looked at Jim and then he lied.
"Don't you remember, friend so true,
I left the diving line with you."
Jim looked at Dick, what could he say?
Could he have really ruined their day?
He racked his brain, he scratched his head-
"Could I have left it 'neath my bed?"
Then doubts began to plague ole Jim
How could he spoiled Dick's day for him?
He thought and thought of what to do.
"How could I fail my friend, so true?"
"Don't worry Pal," said smiling Dick,
"That old, dark cave's an easy trick.
It's fine with me, if you don't care.
I'll go with you, I'll take the dare."
Jim felt so bad for what he'd done
He said "OK, let's have some fun."
They suited up, no easy task.
They donned their gear, their fins, then mask.
The spring was clear and undisturbed
No birds, no frogs, no sound was heard.
But far below where drop no tears
The sound of bubbles filled their ears.
The cave was black, the water, cold.
Oh how could they have been so bold.
How ignorant and how unaware
Of dangers that await them there.
The mouth was large, an easy in.
Ole Dick, with mouthpiece, gave a grin
And thought, how easy this will be.
It's just like counting 1, 2, 3.
They penetrated deep within
And each new room a thrill to them
A hallway left, another, right,
And soon the silt obscured their light.
The hallway narrowed way too thin
And ole Dick's face held no more grin.
To turn about was no neat trick.
They new they better leave right quick.
Dick gave the high sign, "Let's get out."
"It's time to go without a doubt."
Ole Jim agreed, so back they came
But fear had gripped them just the same.
Their faces paled, their lights grew dim,
All tunnels looked the same to them.
The die was cast, the coin was tossed;
And then they realized they were lost.
Ten minutes passed, eight at the least;
Their air consumption had increased.
But still they looked to their dismay,
Still hoping they could find the way.
Jim gazed upon hi sea-view gauge
And what he saw 'most made him age.
It wasn't good, in fact, 'twas bad
300 lbs was all he had.
Dick's showed 500, that was it.
But still he knew they couldn't quit.
Cold chills invaded both their spines
They'd really fixed themselves this time.
Three minutes more had passed them by;
Was this their fate, were they to die?
One thought kept creeping through their mind-
A picture of that diving line.
Dick prayed, "Dear God, I know you're mad.
I know I've made you very sad
I lied to Jim about that line;
I'll make it up to him in time."
"And please forgive me for my sin;
I promise not to lie again.
Oh God, I pray it's not too late
To be delivered from this fate."
Just then ole Jim gave Dick the sign,
His air was gone and so was time.
Dick gripped his shoulder, gently squeezed
As if to say, "Let's Buddy-Breathe."
They made their way, as best they could
By sharing air, as divers should.
Just then a bottle-neck took place,
The current swept them through the space.
So swiftly was the current fed
That Jim had sharply hit his head.
Unconsciously and deathly still
He floated there while Dick took ill.
The current swept them to a room
Where daylight seemed to break the gloom.
The mouth was there, 'twas plain to see,
At last they'd almost made it free.
Then Dick grabbed Jim right by the hair,
"Just 80 feet will get us there."
"Must remember all the rules,
I must not panic, I'm no fool."
So up they went so very slow.
Dick's air was gone, not even low
They broke the surface with their heads;
Alas, 'twas sad, ole Jim was dead.
Somewhere in early morning still
Ole Dick's alarm goes off and will
Awaken him from nightmare, grim
To bring relief and joy to him.
"'Twas all a dream!" Ole Dick did cry.
"I think I know the reason why."
He packed his gear, but took his time,
And this time took his diving line.
The sound of bubbles in his ears.
The call was loud, the urge was great;
He never missed a diving date.
